Machine Learning for Paaspop

Contex

Paaspop is a dutch festival which takes place during Easter since 1974 in Schijndel. The first edition started small and now it has grown into a anual event with 75.000 vistors.

The organisation of Paaspop has the challenge to guarantee the safety of the crowd without ruining the experience the visitor.

Challenge

To manage the crowd there are crowd managers and security guards who work with surveillance camera’s. From our site we where wondering, why don’t use IOT and AI to reduce the handwork. Which created questions at there site; how with IOT and AI help us automate the flow of the crowd? What are the possibilities and how reliable is such a solution? Together we accepted the challenge.

Approach

The plan was to experiment with automated crowd control during the festival. We knew that we wanted to collect the data with IOT and use AI to attack the challenge. But where to begin? By experimenting! We set up the hypotheses and started with a long list of devices to bring them down to a short list. The two idea’s with the best outcome are worked out and applied at the festival.

Results

We hung up the devices at several places at the festival to collect the data. With Computer Vision we where able to make conclusions whether it is busy in at a particular place or not. This data gave us the possibility to analyse the flow of the crowd and build a proof of concept for the organisation of Paaspop.
