VISTA bug: Authentication problems on domain resources after PPTP (VPN) connection

For my work I regularly have to setup a VPN connection to a remote datacenter. Ever since I switched over to Windows Vista, I have regularly had the problem that after I connected the VPN, I would get access denied errors on file shares on the domain my workstation and I are member of. When accessing an intranet website, I would get a logon dialog box, where I should normally be validated with my domain account. Huh?

It took me a few different keywords in Google to find fellow patients…nope, not a proper solution yet. Turns out the new Vista Credentials Manager does it’s work worse then it’s W2k3/XP predecessors. But no fix from Microsoft yet (even though Google returns 1,8 million hits on “Credentials manager problem”).

Two workarounds are posted on http://bink.nu/forums/17018/ShowPost.aspx :

1)      Use the FQN when accessing resources. This won’t help in all situations though.

2)      Run cmdkey /delete /ras after setting up the VPN Tunnel.

I’ll try option 2 and see how it goes. Hopefully Microsoft will fix this issue soon.
